What are Pop-ups?

A pop-up is a type of on-page communication channel that can be created in Persona sequences.

Pop-ups are modals appearing in the middle of your website. This type of channel is typically used for major announcements due to its disruptive nature: it appears in the middle of the page and requires a click to be discarded.


The example below showcases the use of a pop-up to attract attention on a temporary storewide sale and ensure that the visitor knows how the sale works, as well as when it ends.


How do Pop-ups behave?

Unlike notifications, pop-ups prevent your visitors from clicking on anything else in your website until they interact with this pop-up by either:

  • Clicking on any link in this pop-up.
  • Discarding the pop-up, by clicking the discard button on the top right corner of this pop-up.
  • Submitting a form in this pop-up (coming soon).

Visitors have control over how long the pop-up appears for, and so it can be used to communicate information that would not have fit in a notification.

However, because pop-ups greatly affect your visitors' sessions by appearing in the middle of the screen, it is recommended that you do not enable too many pop-ups at the same time.


The example below showcases how visitors can be thanked for their recent order, and invited to give a review in exchange of a coupon code:


How attribution and stats work with Pop-ups?

Pop-ups track multiple metrics:

Instances - Defines the total number of times this particular pop-up has appeared during a visitor session in the last 30 days.

Clicks - Defines the total number of times this particular pop-up has been clicked at least once during a visitor session in the last 30 days.

Orders - Defines the total number of orders that have been attributed to this particular pop-up in the last 30 days.

Value - Defines the total number of $ value of orders that have been attributed to this particular pop-up in the last 30 days.

An order can be attributed to a pop-up only when a click on this pop-up is recorded right before the order is placed. Clicks that discard pop-ups are not counted as a meaningful interaction, and as such, visitors discarding pop-ups without clicking on anything within the pop-up will not have their orders attributed to the pop-up. If more than one Persona communication was interacted with before an order was placed, Persona will attribute the order to the last communication that was interacted with.


How can I set up the "Pop-ups" Channel?

You do not need to do anything in order to be able to use the "Pop-ups" channel. Persona automatically injects its script in your Shopify storefront on install, and removes it on uninstall.
