Create your first Campaign
Campaigns are where you’ll have all of your customer messaging sequences in Persona. In the Campaigns tab you’ll find a list of all your campaigns and see at a glance which are live and what audience is targeted.
Campaigns can be used for a wide range of goals, from “evergreen” use-cases such as welcoming new visitors, to requesting post-purchase reviews and reactivating customers who churned their subscription. You can also build seasonal/temporary campaigns: Black Friday sales, flash sales messaging or new product announcements.
For your first campaign we recommend you create something simple that will be seen by all visitors (your Main Audience) to your site such as sharing a discount code.
Refer to this Shopify article on Discount Types for more information on how to create a discount.
Step 1 - Creating a Campaign
At the top right of the Campaigns page click “Create new campaign”. This will open the Create Campaign panel on the right.
In this panel, you’ll need to:
- Name your campaign.
- Decide whether you want to enable or disable the campaign right from the start.
- Save your new campaign.
💡Pro tip 1: Give your campaign a descriptive name (include a Month / Date if the campaign is temporary or a summary of the desired outcome).
💡Pro tip 2: For now we recommend leaving the campaign status disabled until you’ve finished creating all of the campaign materials and are ready for customers to view it.
Step 2 - Designing and Adding Campaign Materials
Click the Enter button at the end of the row next to the campaign you just created to start adding nodes. For your first campaign we’ll create a Notification and a Pop-Up.
A Notification is a small text box that can contain text, an image or both. It will display for 10 seconds before moving on to the next node of your campaign.
As this is your first campaign you’ll be creating a notification from scratch. All notifications you create in Persona will be saved as templates you can use as a starting point in the future, rather than starting from scratch each time.
Name your notification and press save to enter the visual editor. (hyperlink to walkthrough doc on using the visual editor).
- Select your template: Text Only or Text with Image
- Customize your text. Since the goal of this first campaign is to share a coupon code with visitors, we recommend typing something such as “Flash sale, get XX% off with the code YYYYYY”.
- Add an image (if using)
- Select the location of your Notification
- Save!
💡Hyperlink your code to a URL that applies it automatically to your visitor’s cart by using https://{shop_name}.myshopify.com/discount/{discount_code}
and replacing {shop_name} with your domain and {discount_code} with your discount code.
Ta-da! Your campaign has its first Node.
Step 3: Adding a 2nd Campaign Node
Next let’s add a Pop Up!
Pop ups are larger than notifications and can include a larger image as well as other elements. Pop ups will display on-page until the visitor dismisses it by clicking X to close it.
Step 4: Add a Delay node to your Campaign
There is one more node type available - Delay. Click the Plus Sign at the bottom of your Campaign or drag the icon from the right hand side and drop it into your Campaign flow.
With delay you can set the number of seconds (or minutes…) before the contents of the next campaign node appears.
Add a Delay node to your campaign and set the timing to 5 seconds.
💡 Reorder nodes by dragging & dropping up and down the campaign.
Your campaign should now have three nodes!
Step 5 - Assign an Audience
Your campaign was created with a specific goal and target audience in mind - in this case sharing a discount code with all visitors to your website. Now you’ll assign the campaign to your Main Audience.
Go to the Workflows dashboard and click on the Campaigns box under the Segment Node for Main Audience. That will open a menu on the right hand side. Click “Add More” at the bottom, click Select Campaign and select the one you just created.
Return to Campaigns & you’ll see the Audience in the row next to it. Click the Pencil icon to edit the campaign and set it live!
People who are in your Main Audience (which by default is every visitor to your site) will now see the materials of this campaign when they visit your site.
Congratulations! Your first Persona campaign is live!
